Targeted structured literacy approaches, Cohort 5: Online
This fully funded Ministry PLD is for teachers with a literacy support FTTE entitlement.
Grow your expertise. Lift your learners.
Tāwhirihia is a fully funded, four-term professional learning journey for teachers in schools with a Year 0–6 literacy support FTTE entitlement. This structured literacy PLD helps you raise achievement and reduce disparity for your most at-risk learners.
Inspired by Tāwhirimātea, the atua of winds and weather, the course helps you notice what’s happening for your learners — then respond with the right intensity, direction, and support.
What you’ll learn
This programme will help you:
- strengthen structured literacy approaches described in the New Zealand Curriculum for English
- deepen your understanding of Te Tūāpapa o He Pikorua
- build practical knowledge of assessment tools and evidence-based practices
- design targeted interventions that make a measurable difference
- support learners with additional needs, including ELLs and neurodiverse ākonga
- grow confidence to influence practice across your school
How it works
You’ll build, apply, and refine your practice through:
- Five full-day workshops - dates below
- Eight online Communities of Practice (CoPs)
- Four small-group coaching sessions
Each strand builds on the last — turning evidence into action, and action into impact.
First CoP session:
- 11 May 3:30pm-4:30pm
Workshop dates - held online:
- workshop 1: 21 May: 9.00am-3.00pm
- workshop 2: 12 June: 9:00am-3:00pm
- workshop 3: 13 August : 9:00am-3:00pm
- workshop 4: 15 September: 9:00am-3:00pm
- workshop 5: 22 October: 9:00am-3:00pm
